Sherman began writing mature fiction, mainly stories to do with social and political issues such as prohibition.

went to Hollywood to write the screenplay for Are We Civilized? Philosophical discussions with Hollywood directors inspired Sherman to return to New York and write his first best-selling self-help book, Your Key to Happiness.

During their five years in Chicago, the Arkansas cottage was occupied by Sherman’s brother Thomas Arthur Sherman and his family, who had moved from New York and were to remain in Arkansas for the rest of their lives.
